Caching in the Redlands

Saturday, July 4, 2015

Kevin was staying with me for the weekend and we were going for a little trip to Mt. Cotton in the Redlands.  The trip being too big for just going and returning home was small enough to give us some extra time in the Redlands for geocaching, so that's what we did.  We found a few that had been eluding us in the past, so we were happy to turn them into smileys this time.  The weather was great and just right for a walk, which we needed for the caches around Moogurrapum Creek.

Twin Barrel

A rather confusing cache with different sets of coordinates according to other cachers, and a logbook with a different name.  Also, the signed names in the logbook don't match the logs on line. We suspect that there are 2 cache containers and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them was a throw down.

RBBW - Roadside Stop

No, this is not the cache, but a long dead wallaby lying nearby

RBBW - a PARK for Business

Moogarrupum Creek-Parklands Footbridge

The Moogarrupum Creek Series with which we had such problem finding the caches of in the past.

Moogarrupum Creek-The Twisted Tree

How hard is it to find a tree as twisted as this one.  Answer: very hard
(when you are looking for it on the wrong side of the creek!) ;-)

Moogarrupam Creek-Blackbutt

This one took a while to find, but perseverance wins.

RBBW - Great Wall of Redland Bay

Back to the RBBW series.  This is one that I couldn't find some time ago.
A little tricky one that I definitely should have been able to spot!

RBBW - A Random Tin

And the last one of the day.
Kevin found one more, but I had already logged my find some time ago.

A Night Cache for a change

Monday April 13, 2015

Memory is a strange phenomenon.  I know I have been out on the 13th of April to find a cache nearby, but I must have forgotten to take a picture and looking back at my calendar for that date, I had no reason to go to the mainland that day either, but here we are: I did find a cache and I sure remember all the ants that crawled all over my car boot when I'd removed the lid of the container to sign the logbook. :-)

The cache's name was Peeling Road.

Saturday April 18, 2015

At the end of the same week a group of people wanted to do a Night Cache, meaning that you go out in the dark in search of a cache, generally aided by glowing signs that light up when you shine your torch on them.

Sleepy Hollow was such a cache, made a little bit more difficult because of the walk partially through creek beds and low lying path ways after a out of rain.  It's also a multi, so a fair bit of walking and searching was involved, but all that together, and the surprises we discovered, made it a great experience.

Just two more in the Redlands

Friday, October 31, 2014

While in the Redlands to look after the grandchildren and staying on a bit I had to go for a drive to Redland Bay, so I decided to pick up a few caches on the go.  It didn't quite work that way, because of the total four that I tried I found only two!  My GPS is not always very accurate and when looking for one cache it sending me to the middle of a bare field, while I knew I had to look close to the nearest big wall.  However, even knowing that I still couldn't find the cache.  No. 3 had a specific description of where to look, and I used the hint since I wasn't going to hang around and look suspicious for long, but even that didn't help me.  In saying that, there were two enormous 4WDs in the way who block my view and restricted my movements.  Perhaps better luck next time.

I did find:

RBBW - Oh! Brother.

Yes, in the tree hollow!

and

Get the Whird out

The black stump on the left

This last one was in an environmental park at Thorneside where I have found a few more when doing some geocaching with James. I got this one done just before I had to pick him up from school.  There is another recently placed cache and a puzzle cache which I only solved last week.  Something for next time I guess.

Cleveland

Monday, July 7, 2014

Today my car had to go in for a first service, so I made my way to Cleveland where my car dealer resides. Since it's only a short one, mainly to check the batteries, I was told the waiting time wouldn't be very long.  I first had a nice (complimentary) cup of coffee in the cafe, and then decided to go for a walk.  I knew there to be a few caches in the area within walking distance.

The boardwalk

The first cache was a surprise.  Not so much it's hiding place, but the boardwalk in the swamp so close to the busy road.  It's altogether a tranquil spot to sit and relax for a moment on this beautiful winter day.

It was an easy find, as long as you keep the title in mind.  One of my little tools came in handy, so I son had the cache in hand and could sign the log.

The title may look a bit strange, but Whird actually means word, so one could say: A Word to the Wise!
It's a clever title and I like it.  When you read the hint of this one you understand the title too.

As it was, the hint saved my day, because on my way to the cache my GPS beeped to warn me that I was nearing GZ and then... died!  I kept walking for a bit while changing the batteries, but the GPS didn't even like the new energy and refused to comply, so I thought I'd better walk back to the dealer.  However, on the way back I remembered the hint, and new instantly where to look for the cache.  Didn't need to know where GZ was after all!  My instinct was correct, so I happily signed the log before heading towards the dealer, who happened to ring me just then to tell me the car was ready for pick-up.

Two caches! I know what I'll do next time my car goes in for a service... ;-)

Visiting the Redlands

Sunday, April 6, 2014

Our house on Russell Island has finally been sold and Kevin and I are making the trip for the last time to pick up a few items that were left and say our final goodbyes.  It's hurting a bit, but it also means that I can now start a new chapter in my life...

As usual when we have a little bit of time on our hands we squeeze a few caches in.  This time in the Redlands as we won't be visiting here very often anymore.

Meissner Park

No picture of this one, but it was a nice and easy walk towards a bridge in the park where we found a magnectic cache if I remember well.

Mugarrupum Creek - Little Pond

Mugarrupum Creek - Little Pond
see the little doggie do??? Yep, that's it!!!

There were also Moogarrupum Creek - The twisted Tree and Moogarrupum Creek - Parklands Footbridge, but we could find neither.  The campass needle was bouncing around like mad, and although the twisted tree should have been an easy find, it wasn't.  All afternoon a storm had been brewing and by the time we reached the footbridge it started in all earnest, so we made tracks to the car and went home.

PS When I arrived home, on Bribie Island, the next morning the foreshore looked like a battle field.  The storm and a water spout had cut down a great number of trees and had played havoc with the ones still standing...
