Geocaching at Toorbul & Albany Creek

Friday 28 December 2019

Christmas this year was a quiet affair, which in hindsight I probably could have better spent camping with the Solos at Lake MacDonald.  However, it was not all lost as Kevin came over for a short visit between the public holidays and we spent a day geocaching together.  Almost a year ago a number of new caches had been published nearby when I was away overseas.  It's always handy though to have a few handy. ;-)

We found all but one, on a hot day with plenty of sea breeze to keep us reasonably cool.  Most of the caches were in walking distance from each other, so we took our time.

#2013 - George Bishop Causeway (cache)

#2014 - OZ Day Sangas (cache)

#2015 - Catch a Snag (cache)

#2016 - Roosting Shore Birds (cache)

#2017 - Drop Bears (cache)

#2018 - Moffatt Esplanade (cache)

#2019 - Just Around the Corner (cache)

And also a few general pictures of the area:

Groundspeak would give away two virtual souvenirs at the end of the year: one for finding a cache on new year's eve and another one for a cache on new year's day.  Kevin and I went for a walk when I was staying at Adele's and could log the two caches.  Glad to have two more souvenirs as well.

#2020 -  Faerie Hideaway (cache)

#2021 - A Rocking good place (cache)

Poor Kevin had to do all the logging as I couldn't write.  I had injured my good hand because of a nasty fall just before Christmas....

Some more tree climbing

Saturday June 13, 2015

The Northside Puzzle Group has again organised to get some tree climbing done.  I signed the logbook for both caches, but have logged only one.  The second one was a puzzle cache which I want to solve before I log it online. Weird Fruit is in Albany Creek.  The other one, Walking the Plank, is somewhat to the north.

CITO 2015

We geocachers do a lot to obtain souvenirs.  Well, some of us do and I am one of them, but not necessarily going to great lengths all the time.  Today we could earn a CITO souvenir, which means going geocaching and doing some cleaning up on the go.  Or, sometimes, like today, an even is organised.  This one was a last minute one and not a lot of effort had gone into it to make it interesting, so we worked a few hours with bags in hand, delivered them at the collection point and went in search for caches in the area that were still outstanding.  'We' in this case meant Kevin and I.

A Sandy Bridge - the Finale

This cache was still outstanding from the multi.  We had solved the puzzle and had the correct coordinates, but we had not been able to find it on to earlier occasions.  Today was the day!

Murphy's Law

Oh, this was a tricky one!  At first we were looking in the wrong spot and when we realised it we widened our search.  And then I spotted something and pointed it out to Kevin.  "What's that? Have a closer look!"  And bingo!

Books, Books, Books

This is another one that had to be done.  The solution had been sitting in my 'solved' folder for far too long.

Strong Arm's Downfal

I left this one to Kevin as we had to jump across a swollen creek twice and his legs are a lot longer (and younger!) than mine.

The last one of the day again.  The rubbish collecting in the morning was heavy work and we decided that enough was enough...

Albany Creek

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

I seem to be doing an awful lot of caching these days, but seriously, I don’t mind. ;-)

Today I was in Albany Creek and had the day to myself, so after finishing a book that I was reading for the book club I decided to go out and find a few caches in the area.

There was a series of 8 caches that I could walk, one opposite the grounds and one on the way, so that’s where I stopped first.

Community Church

For the Community Church I wanted to find a parking spot off the road, but could not get to the cache from the parking lot, so parked on the roadside, hoping I would find the cache quickly, which I did.  Signed the log, took a picture and that was that.

The next 8 caches were all in a park and not too far from each other.  I generally took 10 minutes from finding one to the next, and, including the walking time to and from the car I think I managed it in just over an hour-and-a-half.

And this is what I found in every container:

Scrabble letters

There’s also a Scrabble Scramble Finale, but to find the last one I had to find Scrabble letters in each cache plus the question of which the answer could be formed by sorting the letters.  Suffices to say that I took note of all the letters, but didn’t notice the questions!  In the end I didn’t have to go back for them, because after having had a good look at all the letters (and being an avid scrabble player) I did find all the words anyway.  The numbers of the words formed the coordinates, after I’d done some calculations, and at the first check discovered that they were correct.  So, next time when I will be in the area I can go back in search of the final one.

Opposite the spot where my car was parked another cache was hidden.

Not Chinaman’s Creek

This also was a reasonably easy one, for tall people that is, and I could sign the log, take pictures and next I was on my way home.

In the meantime I am filling some spare hours writing this blog update and solving some geocaching puzzles.  Another addiction!

Till next time.
