Utrecht: Vechten, Haarzuilens, 'home', Liempde

Monday 12 June 2023

In the morning we move to our next accommodation in Utrecht where we will be until we go home on the 29th. Its a block of units with a communal garden and seating area downstairs. We're enjoying happy hour in the shade as the sun is still very strong at 5pm.

We visited the Waterline Museum at Vechten. It's part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, important, because the Waterline (roughly stretching from west to east) intersects here with the northern border (Roman Limes) of the Roman Empire. A most interesting historical visit. The second time for me, the first for Kevin. Wim and Gerrie took us there. We finished off this great afternoon at their place with home-delivered chips, hamburgers and other delicious Dutch snacks that I enjoy so much when I am visiting.

A quiet day at home, followed by a walk around the shopping precinct, a coffee in the sunshine and picking up some groceries for the day. Finishing off the day with a drink and nibbles in the communal garden downstairs.

Kasteel de Haar - Haarzuilens

We had another restful morning, but after lunch, we felt energetic enough to visit a nearby castle. This castle was built around 1150 but ruined over time. Around 1900, it was rebuilt on the old ruins by a very rich nobleman and preserved in the state it now is.
Kevin has heaps of pictures of the interieur, but I may place those later on my blog.
The gardens are so extensive that you could ride a bike to get around. We had coffee at the castle restaurant and went home again. It was another great day.

On the way home, Kevin was intrigued by the flags flying at some houses that had a (school)bag attached. These are of students who have passed their final exams and have finished high school or similar. No graduation ceremonies here.

We're grateful for the cheap accommodation, of course, but the exchange home we're in this time is terribly cluttered as the photos show. Three weeks is fine, but longer would stress us out! 🙂

A visit to Liempde, seeing Hans and Erna. I forgot to take photos, so I have added a picture of the house as well as of the patio in the snow, from when I visited in December 2017. This time we had lunch on that patio in lovely sunny weather with birdsong all around us. Hard to imagine when you look at the photos!
