Penong to Bunda Cliffs

Sunday 21 August 2022

Day 7
Penong to Bunda Cliffs

We wake up to a very small world, fog all around us.  We’re not in a hurry and take our time getting ready for the road.  We drive to Nundroo where we fill up with fuel and also have our morning tea. Not much of interest, so no photos.

We are getting closer to the Nullarbor Plain and the landscape flattens considerably

We keep going until we reach the turn-off for the Head of the Bight.  It is whale watching season so we buy tickets to go and have a look.  We are in luck.  During the time we spend at the lookout we see approx. 4 or 5 whales including a mother and her calf.  You can see the whales in the photos, but one would need a much better camera to make a picture of them worthwhile.

On the east coast we generally see the Humpback whales, here in the south they are the Southern Right whales.

It is a beautiful spot and we walk the tracks on both sides to get some good pictures and enjoy the surroundings, because the vegetation, with wildflowers included, is just as enjoyable. The cliffs and the colour of the water are spectacular.

A kind soul takes a picture of both of us and then we walk back to the ticketing office where we enjoy an ice-cream before we go back to the motorhome to have our lunch.

Then we’re on the road again.  I take a few pictures. Again, one of the long straight road and the equally straight horizon, and another one of a road sign warning us to look out for camels, wombats and kangaroos. I missed half the sign, because it’s not easy taking photos from a moving vehicle…

After a short stop at the Nullarbor Roadhouse to top up with fuel (more like liquid gold at the princely price of $2.79/L!) we turn off the highway to drive the short distance to the Bunda Cliffs (#634 31 34 21 S 130 16 39 E) where we are staying overnight.
