Bunda Cliffs to Nuytsland Rest Area

Monday 22 August 2022

Day 8
Bunda Cliffs to Nuytsland Rest Area

In the morning I take a few pictures of the dunes on the way out to the highway.

As we will cross the WA border with quarantine restrictions we clean our boots and shoes of soil, peel potatoes and onions and are ready to dump our rubbish bags, part of the potatoes and a jar of honey, which we can't take across the border. The weather is not so friendly anymore...

After a while we arrive at Border Village and have morning tea at the Border Village Roadhouse. We briefly see some sun, but next it's wet, and we have a very cold wind blowing now.  No pleasure in being outside.

While we are here and have a bit of time I venture out to find two geocaches.  Luckily they are close together, because it starts to rain and I just want to return as soon as I possibly can.

#2390 - Time Travel Made Easy (Traditional Cache)

#2391 - A Shonky $100 Bill (Earthcache)

And then we cross the border. Alas, no photos!  As expected we dump a few items, including the peeled potatoes.  Wasted my time, didn't I? ;-)  Anyway, an easy crossing, because other than a quick look in the fridge the lady didn't bother with a thorough check.

The trip leads further to Eucla, where we fill up again with fuel. Here we go down the plateau through the Eucla Pass and onto the plain. We're leaving the sun and the blue sky behind and it's actually here, on this stretch of the road, that we see the camels.

From time to time we see signs telling us that the road may be used as an airstrip for the Royal Flying Doctors Service to land in case of emergency.  The start and end of the strip are noticeable on the road as well.

Past the Madura Pass, where we go up the plateau again, we stop at a rest area for afternoon tea.  We meet another Swaggie (Swagman motorhome) owned by Tony and Lee Hill from WA.  We take pictures of each other with our vehicles for the Swagman facebook group.

For the night we find a spot at Nuytsland Rest Area where we are all alone and it is bitterly cold.  The diesel heater stopped working, so it was time to dig out the hot water bottle.  We could at least keep warm in bed.
