Norseman to Coolgardie

 Wednesday 24 August 2022

Day 10
Norseman to Coolgardie

I am a day behind, so I have to cast my memory back to Norseman.  Quite a feat with so many new impressions on a daily basis.

After Norseman we see a different kind of vegetation again.  It really is an ever-changing landscape. We also pass an enormous lake, but at this moment it is dry.  It seems like a very shallow lake at the best of times.  Look at the picture behind Kevin:

I take a few more pictures while driving, just to show the countryside.  They are not perfect, but give you an idea.  The colours keep changing from dark green to grey-green, to yellow-green to almost silver and some purple thrown in.

First stop for morning tea at the Widgie Tavern at Widgiemooltha.  We're 90km out of Norseman and would have 76 km to go to Coolgardie, but we're stopping off at Kalgoorlie first.

There are many road trains going every which way and also oversize transport. For some we even have to go completely off the road.  We're in the mining area, so all transport is BIG. ;-)

Besides big transport we could also see stray animals like cattle and kangaroos, but strange enough we see none this trip or at the most very little.

At Kalgoorlie Kevin drives us straight up to the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine and there we walk to the lookout to see the Super Pit.  And it's HUGE!  Just look at the size of the trucks in the pit. They are in themselves larger than life, but look like miniature vehicles.

Later we do some shopping in Kalgoorlie, top up with fuel and dump and the dump point.  All in a day's work...

Next stop is at an old mine, Hannans North Tourist Mine, which is no longer a working mine but now a tourist attraction.

On the way out I find a cache:

#2392 - HNTM (traditional cache)

On to our next and last stop for the day: Coolgardie.  We park near the Historic Railway Museum and later visit the Denver City Hotel where we have a steak burger for dinner with the works and a side of chips.  That'll do us for a while!
